After School Fitness Program | WVU Exercise Physiology

2024 Education Partner

The Main Goal
To incorporate structured play-based exercise into the after school program at Preston County Youth Center.

The Purpose
When we make exercise fun, kids want to be involved. They don’t realize they are exercising when doing an obstacle course or playing a game of basketball, but they are absolutely benefitting from the physical activity.

100+ Children have participated in the program since its offical inception in Fall '24

Project Outcomes

System Changes

Exercise physiology students taught kids at the center new sports, made relay races, and put together obstacle courses which the kids have loved.

Building Capacity

Stronger Communities | Successfully supporting the kids at the Center by leading physical activity opportunities and conducting fitness assessments. This is a FREE program being provided to the Center and is offered to all kids there.

The Bottom Line

The kids at the Preston County Youth Center love having fun and being active. The Exercise Physiology interns add structure and guidance to the activities available at the facility. The kids love a good obstacle course, running funny relay races, and being part of a team. The interns demonstrate leadership skills and help the kids overcome challenges they may have. It’s a win-win collaboration.
