Physical Activity Challenge

Martinsburg High School

The Main Goal
Once a month, students engage in a physical activity misogi. Misogis are meant to challenge one physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

The Purpose
Students deserve a healthy place to learn and grow. Being outside and physically active during school shouldn’t be viewed as a luxury, but an integral part of an environment that produces well-rounded, self-confident, and critically thinking humans

System Changes

Creates a school environment where students are challenged physically as well as cognitively.

Health For All

New equipment made available to students with different options to accommodate students with different capabilities. The misogis are voluntary and have different levels of difficulty. The tiering encourages participation and recognizes that different people have different abilities.

The Bottom Line

With this initiative, Martinsburg High School has designed a way to push students to be their best outside of the classroom. It has given students the opportunity to demonstrate grit, resiliency and resolve. Additionally, teachers report it has increased student confidence and camaraderie, all while further encouraging physical activity among the student body.
