The Bottom Line

Mercer Elementary’s Success Strategies

Using the School Health Action Plan, Mercer Elementary made meaningful opportunities for students, staff, and families to learn, grow, and make healthier choices while building a safer, stronger community. Their success promoting health and wellness has been driven by a proactive, collaborative, and student-centered approach. Instead of relying on one initiative, they made multiple layers of support that address physical health, mental wellness, safety education, and healthy decision-making. A key strategy was building strong community partnerships to expand learning beyond the classroom. By working with local police officers, firefighters, EMTs, healthcare professionals, dentists, nutrition experts, farmers, and community organizations, they made authentic learning experiences that made health and safety concepts meaningful and memorable for students. Events like annual Safety Day and Health Fair allowed students to engage directly with experts while learning practical life skills.
