Education Sector Highlight: March Mathness | Oakvale Elementary
Oakvale implemented a healthy month called March Mathness. This is a school-wide activity held every Friday in March where they compete in math relay races.
Several Mercer County elementary schools — including Mercer, Melrose, Athens, Brushfork, Bluewell, Lashmeet/Matoaka, Montcalm, Mountain Valley, Straley, Spanishburg, and Princeton Primary — are showing how simple movement can strengthen both health and community.
Their before- and after-school run clubs give students and families a place to connect, have fun, and get active together. More than just exercise, these clubs teach goal setting, friendship, and perseverance. Students are learning that staying active isn’t just good for their bodies — it boosts their mood, focus, and confidence too.
With over 800 students, 380 staff, and 25 community members involved, these run clubs are helping create a culture of health that starts early and lasts a lifetime.
