Mountaineer Mile

A Path to Wellness in West Virginia

The Mountaineer Mile is an inspiring initiative launched by Governor Patrick Morrisey to encourage
West Virginians to embrace a healthier lifestyle through daily walking. In partnership with West
Virginia State Parks, official Mountaineer Mile trails have been designated across the state, offering
residents and visitors alike the opportunity to experience West Virginia’s natural beauty, while
improving their physical health. This initiative supports the vision of the Center for ActiveWV, which
aims to increase physical activity levels among both children and adults, ultimately enhancing the
quality of life for all West Virginians. By participating in the Mountaineer Mile, individuals contribute
to a statewide movement towards better health and well-being.

Designate Your Own Mountaineer Mile Trail

Are you passionate about promoting wellness in your community? Designating a trail as an official
Mountaineer Mile is a fantastic way to showcase West Virginia pride and encourage local
participation in this health-focused initiative. By doing so, you can help foster a culture of movement
and wellness throughout the state. If you have a trail or pathway in mind that could serve as a
Mountaineer Mile, we invite you to apply through the Mountaineer Mile Designation Request Form.

Explore West Virginia's Trails

West Virginia’s state parks offer some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the country, making
them ideal locations for Mountaineer Mile trails. With 44 state parks now featuring these designated
trails, there’s no shortage of places to begin your health journey. Whether you’re exploring the
scenic Lake View Trail at Babcock State Park or the historic Long Branch Historic Trail at
Cabwaylingo, each trail provides a unique experience. Additionally, the Center for ActiveWV Loop
in Morgantown is a fantastic choice for those seeking a shorter, easy trail. This 0.4-mile loop offers a
great opportunity for trail running and walking, with the added benefit of solitude, as it is not
frequently crowded. It takes an average of 8 minutes to complete and is perfect for a quick,
invigorating exercise session. To find a Mountaineer Mile trail near you and plan your next
